1st & 2nd Graders

For the new year 2014 our 1st and 2nd graders will be learning about high, medium and low sounds in music.  They will explore various pictures and determine if the picture makes a high, medium or low sound.  I will therefore take it to the next level, once they have mastered this activity.  I will play different sound on the xylophone and ask the students to reach there arms high if they hear a high sound, to crawl up like a ball if they hear a low sound and to stand crossing their arms if they hear a medium sound.  I found a neat little CD that can help your little one practice on high and low sounds.  Check it out at your local library. A great place to find some cool resources.
Look below.  Can you point to the animals that make a low sound? How about the one that make a high sound?

Watch this video! Great song about high and low pitch!
Songs you could use to demonstrate High sound and Low sound is: "Bounce High, Bounce Low"; "Charlie Over the Ocean"; Sesame Street has a song about High Middle and Low pitches.  It is a nice song you could use in your lessons about pitch.  "Three Little Pigs" is a cool song. In the song the little pigs can only say "wee wee" in a high squeaky voice and they would love to say "Oink Oink" in a low voice.  Have your students determine what sound is high vs. what sound is low.  You can also have them show high and low  through their movement.  These are great songs to help reinforce the difference between high and low sounds.
