Happy Singing 3rd Graders!
Pitch Introduction
January 13, 2014
Vocal Warm Up
Start out by singing Solfege Syllables by rote. Do a voice activity with scarves. Have some students come up and explore different ways to use the scarves with our voices. For example: toss the scarf up in the air and use our voices to show the movement of the scarf as it falls down to the ground.
Perform a numerical body scale: Sing solefeg using numbers 1-7 then the last number sing 1. As you sing the numbers perform a body movement showing low to high. Ask the students why did we end with 1?
What is Pitch?

The High and low Sounds in Music
Curwen Hand Signs
Songs: "Hop Up my Ladies"- Perform the Vocal Reading Sequence (Do re mi....) Listen, teach then perform. Teach the dance have students pick a partner. The song comes from the Making Music 3rd Grade. The song is on page 143 in their books.
Fun Activities:
- Condutor Activity
- The students are suppose to sing “la” high or low depending on the condutor's cues. The cue of the conductor is the raise his/her arms for high and lower for low pitch.
- Whacky Do Re Mi Song
- Teach movements
- Hunt the Object
- Using tone bells (1 high pitched 1 medium pitched 1 low pitched)
- When the person that is it gets closer to the object that is hidden the students are to inform the person of how close they are by their bells. If they are close the students play the high pitched bell, if they are in between they play the medium pitched bells, if they are far away they play the low pitched bells. This is a good ear training activity.
- Low Middle High Activity
- Play random notes on piano, play a few at a time and the students move around
- High (stretch up)
- Middle (Make a cross with arms)
- Low (curl up like balls)
Closing Activity: Ask students to sing the Solfege syllables and try to add the Curwen Hand Signs
